2.6 MILLION is the number of reindeer we have lost due to climate change. In fact, in the Arctic, the total number of specimens has dropped from 4.7 to 2.1 million in the last 20 years, that is by 56%. «At the moment we do not see the light at the end of the tunnel» is the sad comment of the scientists of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). They are the ones who sounded the alarm with the publication of the annual report on the Arctic. Due to the rise in temperature it happens more and more often that it rains instead of snowing and this causes a layer of ice to form which prevents the reindeer from feeding on the lichens that grow at ground level. Drought is another consequence of warming and another factor that affects the distance of the number of reindeer: when it occurs for several consecutive years, the fertility of the females is reduced, as well as the survival hope of the pups. Christmas is approaching and one of its symbols is in danger of disappearing due to global warming. Forever.
