Do we know everything about what we ingest?
As reported by the latest Greenpeace Italy report on the issue, in marine organisms belonging to different species, microplastics of less than 5 millimeters were found to be present in 25/30% of the subjects analyzed: we are talking about anchovies, mullets, cod, scorpion fish, shrimps and mussels that swim in the seas of Genova, Grosseto, Isola del Giglio, Ventotene and Naples and that end up in our dishes and, consequently, in our body. On the subject Greenpeace states: «What worries us the most is the rapid evolution of this problem and the gradual transformation of microplastics into nanoplastics, even smaller particles that if ingested by fish can be transfered into tissues and, therefore, be ingested by humans, with still unknown health risks». The presence of these substances is no longer just a problem for the environment and ecosystems, but also for us human beings and the time to reduce the production and consequent use of plastic has really come, before discovering how harmful it actually is.
